Understanding Leaky Gut Syndrome

Millions of you could have it and not know. The symptoms: rashes, joint pain, bloating, gas, exhaustion…sound familiar? The conditions: IBS, Diverticulosis, Crohn’s Disease, Colon Polyps, Ulcerative Colitis, Celiac Disease … Is that you? Most doctors have never heard of it. You may be dealing with a Permeable Gut or most commonly known as “Leaky Gut”.

Intestinal permeability occurs when the lining of the digestive tract becomes permeable (leaky) to toxins or undigested food particles that cause chronic inflammation, making this lining less able to protect the internal environment as well as to filter needed nutrients and other biological substances. Intestinal permeability allows toxins to leak out of the digestive tract and into the bloodstream. This triggers an autoimmune reaction that can create pain and inflammation in any of the body’s tissues. The main cause of permeability is the use of anti-inflammatory drugs, steroids, antibiotics, antihistamines, caffeine, alcohol, and other prescription and nonprescription drugs. Stress also is a major factor in leaky gut syndrome, since the excessive production of cortisol promotes the damage to the intestinal lining.

The Digestive and The Genetics Connection

In our clinic we provide education and we do the right testing to identify the root of the dysfunction instead of chasing diseases and symptoms. Healthcare should be that way. Another thing that we look into in the digestive is your genetics. We do check the genome, from the genome, we do check the mutations that affect the digestive specially in the intestinal flora function. There is a specific gene that you might have mutated from your mom and dad that they gave you that is creating deficiencies in the intestinal flora, which is good bacteria that protects your gut, bacteria that helps break down food and bacteria that doesn’t let the leaky gut happen. But if you have that problem that comes from the genetics and don’t check it, you will never be able to address the problem.Understanding Leaky Gut Syndrome Millions of you could have it and not know. That is why in our office, we do check the methylation pathways through genetics. It is a bit complex, we check over 350 to 400 different genes mutations that may affect the methylation pathways. We really focus in the fact in which your body is methylating or not and that could be interrupted by genetic mutations. And if you are not methylating right, then means that you have the key to turn on and off or express genes you are not supposed to express. There are many genetic test out there to see if you can develop cancer, Parkinson…etc but we focus on understanding how we can prevent those genes from becoming expressed through the methylation pathways and we also take in consideration the environmental factors: what you are eating and what is coming into your body that is going to express those genetics and affect your health. This is the new way of healthcare. We have to go through the process of repairing and cleaning your body, identifying the foods that are affecting your body and putting the right foods in it. It is not just following a diet (you most likely have tried several diets by now) but it is getting rid of the inflammation causing disease. It is a very specific and individual approach versus just trying to eat healthy and trying to hit the target with no specific plan or direction.

“I was concerned with my energy level. I had come to the point where it seemed that every day was a struggle for me. I was having to lay down and take frequent naps to adjust to the emotional frustration going through the day and feeling that I was exerting so  much energy to fight through the tiredness. Also another situation that I was dealing with was Gastrointestinal discomforts. I would eat regularly and my stomach would be unsettled or in pain. Over the last 6 months of working with Dr. J, my increased energy level has been such an improvement in my overall quality of life. I have the energy to do the things that I need to do in my life. Whether it is work, family, or church. I can go through days, even weeks and eat foods and not have my stomach react. This is possible!! On top of that, I have been able to drop pounds and inches. It’s been an incredible experience! My recommendation to you is that you need to try this, you need to hear what Dr. J had to say… I am confident your experience will be like mine and result in a very very happy person.” *
